Twenty years ago, the only type of treatment offered for people were the traditional 12 step programs. After years of unsuccessful rehab, the 12 step programs are finding themselves becoming an antiquated medical service and a resource for billing insurance. Many people who can’t afford treatment are subject to the 12 steps because they are state and government funded and most insurance companies will pay for them. This is the result of great lobbying the 12 step program has done with the pharmaceutical industry and insurance companies.

With such a low success rate, there is now a new form of treatment that provides a common sense approach in dealing with addiction. Non 12 step rehabilitation believes that addiction is a learned behavior rather than an incurable disease. Being a learned behavior the non 12 step drug rehab teaches a person life skills in order for the person to fully recover and make good decisions in life like not taking drugs.

Remember, when researching drug rehabs make sure that the program uses a non 12 step approach and holistic treatment. Make sure that even if the rehab says they are holistic, double check that they do not prescribe medications like anti-depressants as treatment for the underlying issues. This only masks the problem and does not allow for the addicted to individual to learn how to cope and deal with problems in life.
